Help End Distracted Driving

Distracted driving can come in a number of different forms and can be very dangerous. While talking on the phone is a distraction itself, texting is what takes a driver’s complete focus off the road. It takes one hand to hold a phone and your only set of eyes to read and write a message. Texting also takes your mind off the task at hand. When you allow your vision to veer off the road and onto your phone, a car could have pulled in front of you. You might not see them until it is too late. You might not see them at all.

Distracted driving accounts for 80% of collisions on the road each year. When a driver allows themselves to be distracted by their phones or anything else, they become a 2,000 lb. weapon on the road. Accidents do happen. If everyone puts their phones down and keep their eyes on the road, these accidents will be greatly reduced.

The Urban League of Northwest Indiana and State Farm have partnered to combat the dangers of distracted driving. The “I TXT I WRECK” campaign is leading the effort to stop texting and cell phone use behind the wheel. The campaign, launched in 2013, helps promote and raise awareness and informs drivers of the risks involved with distracted driving.
